Langer wins weather-shortened PGA TOUR Champions opener

Titleist golf ball loyalist Bernhard Langer (Pro V1) was declared the winner of the Mitsubishi Electric Championship after strong winds blowing across the Hualalai golf course halted the tournament after 36 holes.

Langer shot 64-65 in the first two rounds of competition to lead the field at the tour's first event of 2017.

The one-shot victory was the 30th for Langer on the PGA TOUR Champions. He also is the first player to win this event three times.

As play progressed on Saturday afternoon, sustained winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 had golf balls rolling off the greens. The Sunday forecast called for similar conditions, prompting the decision to suspend the event.

Langer, who was named the PGA TOUR Champions Player of the Year for 2016 is coming off his third consecutive season as Charles Schwab Cup champion.

Congratulations, Bernhard!
