I want to drop my 714 API 4,5 & 6 irons for 21, 24 & 27 degree 913H hybrids.My clubs were fit at +1/2'' which makes my 7-iron 37 1/2''.
Ok, here it is. A couple of days ago I went to see Mike Warobick the Titleist Advanced Fitter who fit my other clubs. Here is what we found. The 913F 21deg. was a better fit for me than the 913H 21deg. I was able to launch the 913F higher than the 913H. Mike said that he wished that Titleist made a 913F in 24deg. He said that Titleist will be coming out with new Drivers, Fairways and Hybrids in the fall, so let's see what happens.

                                                                                      Frank P

Thanks for the post, Frank.

Sounds like you found a good combination that will help gap the top of the bag and help you hit some better approach shots from further distances.

Keep us up to date.

Regardless, the wonderful thing about Titleist is that the same clubs that their tour professionals use are available to you as well as with other options..712U irons etc...

Have fun and enjoy your journey in filling out your set of clubs!

Re: Conversion To Hybrids

Like Don, I hit a 7 wood instead of a 21 hybrid because I get about 10-15 yards more with the fairway. The beauty of a 7 wood is you can hit it off just about any lie.

Going from a long iron to a hybrid can change you from high handicap to low or mid. 30 years ago I had no problem with a 1 iron or 2 iron (then again, the lofts were 18 and 21 back in those days) and could hit a 1967 vintage 3 iron about 210. I found out it 2006 that I struggled with any iron longer than a 7. I also discovered I fared better with a 7 wood vs a 3H..

I actually teetered between a 9 wood and a 5H between 2006-2011. I carried a 28.5* persimmon 10 wood between Mar 2010 - Mar 2011 and totally switched to a 26 or 27H.

I discovered "approach" hybrids of 34* around 2007 mainly as a backup to the 6 and 7 irons. I even carried a 38* hybrid between 2009-2011 because I totally dropped the 7 iron due to some swing issues. When I went to AP1 irons, I kept the 34 hybrid but dropped the 38 because I could hit the 8 iron a little farther than the 38H. I broke 90 in 2009 using the combo of 38H, 8-PW and wedges.

So to reiterate my setup: 13* draw driver, 5W (18), 7W (21), 5H (26), 6H (29), AP1 8-PW, SM4 50-08 and 54-11 (1* strong), 58-06 and 64-07, 7H putter. I broke 80 last year.

Re: Conversion To Hybrids

The purpose of replacing irons w/hybrids is to improve consistency and a benefit is to improve loft. The hybrids are adjustable to 22.5, 25.5, and 28.5, closely corresponding to the 23/26/29 irons. Depending on how you use the 4/5/6 irons, you are looking for more distance or the ability to improve launch to minimize roll-out to hit a green and stay on. Something many mid-high handicappers struggle with, with the longer irons.

Back to Bubba's recommendation to see a fitter, determine how you want to use the clubs, and find the consistency, distance, and roll-out control you are looking for. I can hit most par 3's with my 4/5 hybrids, so I use a 7W (21 degree) as my 3 iron, as I can get 15-20 yards more than the 4H. It is typically my second shot on par 5's - as it is much more consistent than a 3/4 wood. I wouldn't focus on matching length/loft/shaft as much as getting the characteristics I can't get with using long irons.

Re: Conversion To Hybrids

According to the specs for AP1 714, the 5 iron is 26*, the 6 iron is 29*.

I have been told the 21 replaces the 3 iron, the 24 the 4 iron and the 27 the 5 iron. With the 27, I had 165 yards on the D1 setting and 155 on the A3 setting; this coincides with getting 165 out of a 26* hybrid and 155 out of a 29* hybrid.

I've been using a 34* hybrid since 2006 (started as a backup for a 7 iron). I also have been using a 7 wood since 2006 since I hit it better than a 3H.

Re: Conversion To Hybrids

Also, hybrids generally get 5-10 yards more vs an iron with the same loft.

I had some 910s before (21-24-27). I played them an inch short but also at maximum upright lie angle with a light grip. If you shorten the clubs by an inch, you lose 6 swingweight points if you keep the standard 52 gram grip. The Winn Dri Tac Lite is 26g in oversize. That recovers a little over 5 swingweight points.

714 AP1s have a stronger loft vs the earlier ones (the PW is 44*).

Like Bubba stated.... see a fitter.

Thanks for the question.

Quite honestly, the only way to answer this question is to see a local Titleist fitter and hit the different lengths and options. There is no set rule that if your irons are a certain length, your hybrid should be the same.

I wish I could give you some more guidance, but the only way to know for certain is to hit the different lengths.

Thanks.
