  1. I am currently considering either the AP1 or AP2 irons. At 6'-5" with a 40" static wrist measurement, I have been using +1", 2up iron specs. My local shop had a set of AP1's with DGS300's at 2" over and although I hit them well, they were very heavy. Currently using X100's in my clubs but getting older and considering a move down to a "stiff" or stiff+ rated club. Any help in selecting the right head/shaft combo and what can be done to keep the club a bit lighter? Currently hit a lower ball flight and play to a 9 hcp with about a 102 mph driver swing speed. Thanks, Steve

Wow, that's 12 swingweight points with 2" long. Shaft changes to graphite would account for only 3 swingweight points (20g per swingweight point for uncut shafts) but the club would be 60 grams lighter. An ultra lightweight grip would do the opposite - it would INCREASE the swingweight but make the club physically lighter. I go this way because I play upright fairway woods with shafts 1/2" shorter than stock. I ran it on the chart from another manufacturer and it came up with Maroon +1 which is 4* upright. Given that Blue on this chart is the same as Titleist Standard (I know because my dynamic fit is Blue Dot as is Titleist Standard. I am 6'1" with a WTF of 35.5")....that would be 3.25 upright. The only issue with the irons from the other manufacturer is they are spaced .75* vs Titleist being .5* from the 5 iron down and 1* from 5 iron up. They have butt weights to reduce the swingweight but that makes the club physically heavier. Oh yeah, I switched from Eye 2 to AP1 irons. I play to a 12 and use R300. See what the fitters here would say. My info comes from constructing golf clubs and modifying my own (with a little help from local fitters).

  3. Thanks for the response Lou..Yes 2" over was a bit much and did bring the swing weight up quite high. Still thinking of going with a less stiff shaft from my current X100 to gain a bit more distance and feel. S300 feels pretty good at the moment but looking for feedback from other fitters here on possibly going with 1" over on an S400 shaft to get somewhere in between the S300 and X100. Thoughts?

How's your ball flight with S300? If you are hitting a high fade or high draw, may think about going to S400. Stiffer shafts tend to add control but with some distance sacrifice.

Hitting a med-high draw. I thought about going to the S400's but due to the extra +1" in length was worried about weight.

[/quote] I went to True Temper's website. There is a 4 gram weight difference between X100 and S400 on parallel iron shafts and 2 grams on tapered iron shafts (I assume your irons use taper shafts). That is on the uncut weight and it takes 20 grams difference between shafts to change swingweight by 1 point (remember that is 4 grams on a 41" shaft). No problem with weight because it would be nil on the finished product. If you are using standard grips you may want to think about going to a midsize grip or oversize grip because I am assuming you have a large hand (being a taller player). This will kill the swingweight for sure (standard rubber grips are 52g, midsize are 65 or so and oversize are 72;10 gram change in grip weight = 1 swingweight point).
  7. It's 1 SW point for each 9 gram of shaft so if you dropped 20gr shaft weight you would loose 2 SW points. It's why shafts generally go up in 7-10 gr increments.

I found the website that tells about the shaft swingweight points.    Posted it in another discussion.  That was mis-info that I received.   5G for grip, 3 swingweight points per 1/2" and 2g on clubhead were all well known.   Verified it on my swingweight calculator on the computer.

Please keep in mind that numbers don't include the balance of the shaft or the particular build of the shaft.  Swingweight is simply the way the entire club balances.  If there is more material towards the butt end of the club, the swingweight will be lighter and if there is more material towards the bottom or head of the club/shaft, the swingweight will be heavier.  6-10 grams of shaft weight will change a swingweight one point depending on the balance of the shaft.

Would it be conceivable to fit the person 1/2" long vice 1" long and 1/2* more upright?  The swingweight wouldn't be so drastic but my figuring is the tradeoff is higher ball flight due to a steeper swing.

  11. Hey bud I am same build as you 1 inch shorter same swing speed... I currently use only 1 inch over standard and one degree up in the toe I tried 2" inch longer lost a little control little harder to hit. Make sure sure your comfortable do some research I think Ernie is are height and I think he uses standard length clubs. I use project x 6.0 shafts love them if your like most talk guys you hit it height the project x helped me bring the ball down a little. I'm a 5 handicap. Good luck with shopping
