I strayed from Titleist for the first time in 8 years. I bought the TM P790’s with C Taper Lite shafts. I find that I don’t spin them enough and my flight is pretty low. I am having a hard time holding the greens with anything stronger than a 7 iron. My driver swing speed is about 96 MPH. I want to go back to Titlitlest. I don’t like the AP1 (too big). I need a higher launching club but don’t want a lot of offset. I know I can accomplish a little bit through shafts. I also know the best thing is to go get fitted. But, for discussion purposes, any suggestions on clubs. I am open to AP2, CB’s, TMB’s, and maybe AP3 (although I wasn’t crazy about the sound).

You never mentioned whether or not you got fit for these TM's. You should go find someone who can get you on a Trackman and determine if these are the right shafts for you.

Likely you can find an AP2 or CB with a shaft that will achieve ideal launch and spin conditions. I can attest that the AP3 is a launching and distance monster. Noticed the P975 has lofts stronger than the AP1. You should be able to get a similar shot with the 8 Iron as you would with the AP2 7 iron. Maybe part of the issue is the loft of the irons that "makes them longer".

You know, what I think you need to do is see a Titleist fitter and check out the irons and see what works best.......head and shaft combo.....
  5. I currently play the 718 AP2, with the AMT white shaft. Now when I was being fit for them, the fitter swapped out quite a few shafts, and that same AP2 i could launch skywards or worm burners with the change of the shaft. I dont know if you can do that with a TM, but I do know with a Titleist 718 AP2, your fitter will be able to tailor it to suit your needs. I also know the same can be done with the CB and TM-b as my fitter and I hd that discussion, but in the end i went with my 718 AP2 and love them. Best decision I have ever made

I got fitted so I'm not sure what did it, but I'm in AP2s now and have higher ball flight. Having said that- I would bet a lot that other aspects of the fitting play a big role in that.

That C Taper is going to give you a low launch. I bought the AP3s this year and love them. I would definitely recommend a Titleis fitting to get the right shaft.

It could have been a number of different factors (ball position)

    Glad it worked out

The P790 is labeled as a “distance players” iron, meaning that the P790 is supposed to have the look and feel of a classic forged iron, while also providing higher ball speeds and more distance.

    In a Titleist " AP3- It’s the player’s distance iron"

I played KBS's in last set of AP's and loved them, and the C Taper Lite is "MID-HIGH LAUNCH. SPIN CONTROL. PURE PERFORMANCE " according to KBS, but the key is, I think I read between the lines you didn't get these P 790's fitted.

Until that happens, you're guessing. That launch monitor seems to make all the difference in the world to finding the right head and shaft for your swing.

    What's your Handicap ?

    Good Luck,

My Previous AP's had KBS shafts and I loved them, a C Taper Lite is Mid to high Launch

I reviewed your initial post and realized you answered your own question"....the best thing is to go get fitted."
