Vokey Pitching Wedge vs. AP2/AP1/CB/MB Pitching Wedge

    I noticed that some guys on tour prefer a Vokey Pitching Wedge vs. their current iron model.  How frequent is this on tour...I have both and it seems the Vokey has a lot more "play" or workability than my AP2.  

    Just curious what the stats are if you can disclose?  Thanks!

    Just an example - at the Barclays this year, there were 411 wedges in play and 36% were playing Vokeys.  Of the 411 wedges, 123 were pitching wedges and about 27% of the PW were Titleist.  54% of those were Vokeys.

    It's probably all personal preference and the type of shots you tend to hit with your shorter irons.  I play both a pitching wedge (47 degree) and a gap wedge (51 degree) in the AP2's and then have two Vokeys in the bag (55 and 60 degree).  I find that this gives me good distance gaping in my clubs.  I use this setup because I tend to hit full shots with the PW and GW (135 and 120 yards respectively) and use the Vokeys for more "feel" shots closer in to the greens.  I find it much easier to evecutre the partial "feel" shots with the Vokeys than the AP2s.

    Thanks for the stats.  Besides personal preference, what would be the advantages or disadvantages of swapping an MB PW with a Vokey SM4 besides the additional options with a Vokey wedge (bounce, finish)?

    Hi Ruben,  You ae right, preferance as well as the additional options of bounce and grind play a part in the choice of a Vokey over a PW as well as the ability to play different types of shots.  The versatility is the main reason they choose fo play a Vokey. 
    If there is a disadvantage, it could be if you are not able to match the feel in your irons.  We would recommend using the same shaft and flex as your iron sets because a PW is a full shot club.

    I never even ordered the PW in my 712 AP1 set went with the Vokey 246, 250, 256, and a TVD M 60.  The 246 and 250 are the best clubs in my bag on full shots and around the green.  Never considered matching the shafts to my irons but all the wedge shafts are the same

    Good advise.  I love my Vokeys, and I don't dislike my AP2 P, but I think I'd like a Vokey better.  If I put the same shaft in, do you think I'd notice a change in distance or spin?

    I ditched my PW for a 48* Vokey and I have never regretted it.  My 48* is one of my favorite clubs in my bag.

    It depends.  If you get a 46* vokey like I have, it shouldn't make much different in the distance but you will have maybe a higher ball flight due to the increased spin.  If you get the 48* vokey you will probably lose around 5 yards and get a higher ball flight.  I would recommend getting the 46 because a normal ap2 PW is 47* and you are going to see no increase in distance but you will have better spin control.
