  1. I have the AP1s 43* PW, 48* AW, plus gap wedges 52*, & 56*. How do you use your similarly gapped clubs? Around the green? Bunkers? From the fairway? Rough? I’m new to multiple wedges, so hoping to pick up some good tips. Thanks.

  2. I have C16's, PW is 43*, W is 47* and I have 50.12 SM7, 54.10 SM6 and an old 260.04 (60*). This gives me roughly a 10 m (12 yards) gap between shots from 70 m (77 yards) to 110 m (120 yards). Conversions from m to yards is rough (lazy).

What I use around the greens and in bunkers depends on the shot, how much role I want and the lie. Don't get too hung up about a club from the rough for instance.

The Vokey website has a nice picture that shows what the best bounce is for certain situations. I think the bounce is more important that the loft.
  3. I'm interested to see how this post pans out. I too have the ap1's and I'm really enjoying the high ball flight I get with them.

I only have two wedge's in my bag a 54 & 60. I know I should probably have more for the correct gapping but so far I'm finding I have every shot I need.

The pw is so versatile for me and when I have no trouble in front I tend to take the 8 iron to roll it up close.

I carry a 52 & 56 (56 is high bounce) in the bag with a 48 degree wedge which for me is a pitching wedge. I play full shots with the 48 & 52, & anything under 60 yards I manipulate the 56 degree as I find I'm more confident with it.
  5. At the end of my round yesterday, no one was on the course behind me. I played around with various clubs from the fairway to about 15 - 20 yards to the pin. I practiced with a 7 iron to my 56* wedge. And, like many of you have commented, the 56* (or so) seems to just work right sometimes. I need to find my carry and roll distances with my new clubs, including full and 3/4 swings with my wedges. I appreciate the feedback.

Me personally, I have AP2 PW, Vokey 50, 54 and 58. I use the PW - 54 for full or 3/4 shots. I use the 54 in greenside bunkers also depending on the sand composition. Other than that I use my 58 anywhere from 75 yards in. That consists of full to 3/4 shots, pitching, chipping, flopping and bunkers.

Gave my 60 away years ago. My game not at hat advanced at an 11 handicapper. My buddy I play with showed up with a 68*wedge this week. Asked what in the world are you doing with a wedge with that much loft. It was on sale. I said how much $20 and he said yes. I told him that he can barely break a 100 and the most he should be carrying in his bag would be a 56*. You should not be carrying clubs you cannot hit. Most loft I carry is a 58* which I use for shots 60 hards and under with great lift and accuracy. Next 52 degree 80 degrees. 48 degree 100.... 44* ....... 115 My clubs of choice are 716 AP1s but will be looking for an upgrade this year. Am not a long ball hitter a 72 years of age.....my yardage runs about 15 yards between club.......and I carry a 5-PW52.....to complete my set up: 917D (11.25) 917f2 (16.25) 816h1 (19.00) 818h (22.5)....these numbers help manage my distances very well......and I generaly hit to my numbers on the course....

I have AP1's as well. My set up is 44 PW, Vokey SM6 48 08 F, 54 10 S, 58 08 M. My 48 I use full and 3/4 swings. My 54 I tend to use on Full, 3/4 pitching and chipping depending on the lie. My 58 I use primarily when I need to flight the ball high and have little roll out on the green much like flopping.
  9. I us my 60.8 SM 6 for any shots close around the green. Now that we finally have warm weather in Southern Ontario, I am using the 60 degree for longer shots because the greens are just too hard and fast to stop the ball. I use my 56 degree for all bunker shot with 2 disclaimers, 1. if it is a short bunker shot, or 2 a really long one then I will us my my 52 degree.
Depending on the course, and the length of the rough, I use my 56 degree almost all of the time. My speciality shot is what I call the "pop up" chip. Come down hard right behind the ball to make sure it gets out, land on the green and run out to the hole. If I am in too close for that shot, I will play my 60 degree like a sand shot. Again get it in the air, and hopefully have enough spin to stop it close to the hole.
This has been a good week; I have chipped in 3 times.
Another shot I really like is the longer pitch shots. For those, I like to hit either the 56 or 60, keep the ball about 4 feet of the ground, and it practically stops on the 2nd bounce. Not for the feint of heart, because if it doesn't check on the 2nd bounce you have 10ft+ coming back.
Also, as previously mentioned, you need to adjust to conditions as required. I was in a match last year, and on the front 9, using my 56 I was going past the hole. On the back, hitting the same shots but with my 60, I got up and down 5 times. It didn't hurt that my opponent went in the water 2X, but the fact remains that if you can chip to 3 or 4 ft max from off the green you are going to make up for a lot of less than perfect approach shots.
  10. I find now that I think about course management more when I play I don't usually have shots less that 70 yards, assuming I've hit the previous shot well. On short par 4's, say 320 yards, I will hit my 2 iron so that I have around 100 yards left. This puts me in the middle of my wedges. Hit it better and it's a 54, not so well and it's 50 or W.

Same on par 5's. If I can't reach in 2 I will lay up with a club that will give my 100 yards or so. This doesn't always work but I get more pars hitting my 2 iron of the short par 4's than if I hit my driver on the same hole. Occassionally I hit driver, say in an Ambrose comp and someone is already in a good location, but not often. I can almost reach the shoerter 4's on my courses, but there is a lot of trouble on these holes and driver for me is not a sensible play.
  11. I’m finally starting to work towards this end as well... better course management!

I like to use the 56 degree. Very versatile loft that can be used for many different shots, lies and all that! I also have a 60 degree, but only certain situations call for it i guess. If i had to choose one, it'd be the 56 degree.

My wedge setup is RM21 42 (9 iron replacement), SM7 46-10F-52-08M, MD3 64/8. This is for varying conditions. For hard greenside bunkers, I'll use the 64 most of the time (the 58 for long shots played back). One course has such soft greens I generally use the 52. The 42 is for two tiered greens on the same course. I primarily use the 42 and 46 for full swings and long pitch shots (80 yards). I use the 58 quite a bit from 25 yards in.

My thumbnail shows the update. Typo: I had previously had 52-08F and 58-08M. I also uprgraded my 64* to Mack Daddy PM Grind. I have 50-08F and 54-10S available.

Update - my wedge setup lofts are 44-50-57-64. I returned the 54-10S to the store and got the irons shown in the thumbnail. 44 is primarily full swing. I do a majority of my shots between 50-100 yards with the 50 and occasional bump n run around the green. The 58-08M is my primary club within 50 yards and in softer greenside bunkers. I use the 64 mostly from 40 yards in with little real estate on the green and in hard greenside bunkers.

I have all vokey wedges. 50, 54 and 58. I signed up for a monthly subscription box from shortpar4.com and received a cobra wedge in one of the boxes and couldn't even get through 9 holes with the wedge. Vokey wedges are BY FAR the best wedge out there.

I play the AP1's with a 43 and 48 that matches the set. Then I have a 52 S that I use for full shots. My 56 M is the highest wedge that I have in the bag as of now and I use is everywhere form full shots, chip shots around the green and it is my go to sand wedge.

    Considering a change to 54 M and 58 D.

My wedge setup lofts are 44-50-57-64. The 44 is a 46-10F bent strong and the main purpose is full swings. The 50 I use primarily for full swings, pitching, bump and run chip shots. The 57 loft is a 58-08M and mainly pitching under 55 yards where pin placement is tight plus sand shots in soft bunkers. The 64 I use for hard greenside bunkers and within 40 yards for pitching. The 44 loft full swing is 115 yards, the 50 is 100, the 57 is 80 yards and the 64 is 65 yards. Pitches are 80 65 50 and 40.

I only carry 2 wedges, a 56.12 and a 52.08.I'm better at playing 3/4 low checkers than I am at full throttle.I've never been a lob wedge guy. I do have a 58 Vokey that I'll swap out for the 56 if I'm playing a course with a lot of elevated greens.

A few months ago I switched irons to the 718 AP2 irons which have more traditional, weaker lofts. At first I replaced replacing the "P" wedge (46 degrees) and "W" wedge (50 degrees) with a SM6 46.08F and 50.12F combination. My sand and lob wedges were SM7's the 54.14F and 60.12D I'd used with my previous iron set.

Once I actually tried the 718 AP2 set pitching wedge I liked it a lot. The PW is usually full-swing club for me. Having it basically play like the other irons suits me fine and the AP2 isn't as bulky as some other "set" wedges I've used.

So currently I go from the 46-degree AP2 PW to a classic 52/56/60 setup of Vokeys. The gap wedge is a medium bounce 52.08F, the sand wedge is a high bounce 56.14F and the 60.12D lob wedge has high measured bounce but heel/toe relief .

    Here's what I'm finding:

The 52-degree Vokey is good for longer bunker shots (especially bunker shots from packed or hardpan sand) and also when pitching the ball from very tight or firm lies.

The higher bounce 56-degree is great from fluffier sand and is my go-to club for pitching the ball from normal lies or especially out of the rough.

The high bounce 60-degree is great for any "creative" shots from difficult situations, including when short-sided from a bunker, or for getting the ball up and over a bunker with little green to work with.

For routine chipping and bump-and-run type shots I'm using the AP2 pitching wedge. It seems to work best from clean lies, if I'm coming out of the rough when near the green I use one of the Vokeys instead. But I miss a lot of greens by just 5-10 yards and the AP2 PW (or 7, 8, 9 irons for that matter) are fine for those basic chip shots.

I replaced the stock 48 pitching wedge with Vokey, and I use 54 F for hard turf, 58 M for soft sand
  22. I got a 48 degree wedge and now I feel I'm covering all distances.

    The SM7 wedges are amazing!
